Founded in 2023, Azmar Jewelry is a Kurdish woman-owned jewelry business that aims to share our cultural designs and motifs with communities across the diaspora. We handcraft our pieces with quality (gold and rhodium-plated) chains and traditional stones, beads, and charms from Kurdistan.
Co-founder Shelan Fatah began creating jewelry during her time in Slemani, Kurdistan in the 1990s, when she would sell her pieces in the Qaysari Naqib Bazaar. Displacement would put a pause to her craft for several decades; in 2021, she began teaching her daughter, Dalal Hassane, how to meld contemporary jewelry techniques and styles with the motifs and traditions of her beloved Kurdistan. Together, we began selling pieces in markets in Chicago and Boston, sharing the designs and customs of a homeland we continue to carry in our hearts, minds, and souls.
